William Henry Gates III is popularly known as Bill Gates is an American business leader, technologist, software developer, and philanthropist. He is the principal founder of Microsoft Corporation, the world’s largest software company and one of the most influential technology companies on the planet.

He was born on 28th October 1955, in Seattle, Washington, U.S. and grew up with an amazing and supportive family who encouraged his interest in computers at an early age. His dad, William Gates Sr., was a senior lawyer and his mother, Mary Gates, was a school teacher. There was a strong expectation that Bill would follow his father’s footsteps. As the young Bill Gates excelled at school and also developed a particular proclivity for mathematics and computer science. He was attending Harvard, believing that a personal home computer was the future of the industry.

He got married to Melinda French in 1994 and they have three children. With his wife, Bill Gates formed the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Bill and Melinda Gates co-chair the charitable foundation are working together to give their wealth back to society. He retired from full time working at Microsoft, and has started working with his charitable foundation “The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation”. Bill Gates has sought to focus on major global problems ignored by the government. He expressed a keen interest in improving health and public school education standards.

Bill Gates founded Microsoft in 1976 to develop a basic operating system for new microcomputers. The major break for Microsoft came in 1980 when IBM collaborated with him for a BASIC operating system for its new business. In 1980, Gates and Allen launched an operating system called MS-DOS to IBM, the world’s largest computer maker. Microsoft started selling its computer operating systems to major other companies. Thus this company was able to gain a prominent position in the software field. Microsoft was the dominant provider of computer operating software and as a result, his personal computer market started to boom. Microsoft Word and Excel programs have become the industry’s standard.

Presidential Medal of Freedom was awarded to both Bill and Melinda Gates by President Obama in 2016 for their Foundation’s charitable work.
