An alumnus of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar’s Metropolitan Institution, Narendra was the only person to gain first-class marks in the entrance exam of Presidency College. He was a passionate reader in a wide range of subjects like religion, philosophy, social science, history, art and literature. Educated in classical music, he was also very energetic in exercise, sports and organized activities. He was an all-rounder in a real sense.

His initial ideas and thinking directly resulted from the Brahmo concepts of a formless God and abandonment of idolatry. He also strived to represent Hinduism in a universalistic approach. Debendranath Tagore, who had a rather radical approach to the development of the new doctrines also altered his ideas, and questioned central Hindu beliefs like reincarnation and karma, and rejected the authority of the Vedas.
